Default The "size" of a warehouse facility?

    Hi,
Can someone tell me how much should the size of an empty premise be which will be converted into a warehouse or distribution centre to store products for a sports retailer? Please help.

With the limited information that you have provided this will not be able to be answered in its entirety..

There are many things to consider and analyze before an effective decision can be made... for example..

What is the expected turnover of the retailer?

Is this their first warehouse or an additional site?

How many customers will be serviced from the site?

What is the expected demand by customer?

What type of products will be stored in the facility?

What rate of throughput do they have?

What are levels of anticipated stock holding to achieve your defined service level to your customers?

What configuration do your products have on pallets?

Will there be any flammable or hazardous items stored?

What type of racking will you require?

What type of MHE will the site be using?

There probably lots more questions that need to be asked, I have just alluded to some of them above, to give you food for thought.

It is assumed it is an empty premise, which will be used as a warehouse/dc.
we have to come up with a storage system, picking operations, utilisation/packaging/labelling, MTH, WMS, level of automation in warehouse.
I would really appreciate some help in making the assumptions.
And what should the layout of the warehouse be?
    Thank you.

    Mina,

I would suggest that you post your University question on the forum, as with your request for so many suggestions, I find it a little hard to believe that the University would have given you a question to answer without giving you any kind of background information to aid you in finding the answer!

Bottom line, I cannot offer you suggestions as I do not have them, hence the request for the background information to the question originally asked.

im finding it difficult to do the assignment with such limited help from the lecturers myself, thats why ive come here. ive asked a few friends, but no one is giving me the right answers, i have no idea about sqaure meters, and acre or hectures. So i would like some guidance. We are given a hypothetical situation to report on, so everything is based on assumptions.
But if its hard to believe that it is a uni asnmt, then i cant prove otherwise.

    Here's the question:

    "Hypothetical scenario: convert an empty premise into a warehouse/dc, that stores and manages products of a sports retailer. assumption on the facility, no of sku, product type and category, customer serv levels should be made;
you should come up with the layout, type of storage system, picking operations, unitisation, packaging, labelling, MTH,WMS, level of automation in operation."
"a layout of the facility must be designed".

    Mina,

    Ok, I understand..

So lets start with the basics, and what we know from the question, and lets look at the products that will be stocked in this warehouse..

I dont know much about New Zealand sport, but would imagine that Cricket and Rugby are the national sports, with Soccer a secondary sport, and then the likes of Basketball, Volleyball, Tennis, etc being peripheral sports, I could be wrong though so please advise?

So to keep it simple, choose the National sports and the secondary sport as the sports to focus on with regards to products.

Do some research into what percentage of the populace account for playing each sport, doesnt need to be exact, but this will give you a very rudimentary idea of product demand.

Next think of all the products that you feel would be associated with each sport, for example... Cricket; - Cricket Bat, Cricket Ball, Stumps, Pads, Gloves, Helmets, Boxes, Bees Wax, the list goes on..

Then think about each identified product in relation to its use, and demand within the sport.. for example, Cricket; - Crickets Bats would need to be replaced more often than Pads, Cricket Balls would need to be replaced more often than Bats...etc

When you have these answers, come back to me and we will ove to tne next steps..

    Tasks for you:

    1. Identify the sports that you will specialise in
    2. Identify what percentage of the populace is attributed to playing each sport
    3. Identify what items are associated with each sport
    4. Identify the Fast, Medium, Slow moving items based on their usage and need for replacement in each sport.

Once you have these answers, we can move on..

The last thing you need to do which was one of the tasks is to identify the demand, what % of the populace play cricket, vs the population total of New Zealand

Again as said, very rudimentary but will give a general idea of demand..
