Default Use of Rail?

I remember reading somewhere that the use of rail only becomes economical for distances over 400km. Don't know where I read that. Anyone know of any rough guides like that?

I think it would vary a lot depending on the country, cost of rail, value of goods etc etc?

Don't know of any rough guides, but I reckon it would have to be 1,000 km +. By the time you take account of double handling at both ends and the slow speed. But as others have said, will also depend on the country, relative costs against other transport modes etc.
