'Factory Shutdown May Result in Chinese Port Bottleneck - The Chinese government plans to shutdown polluting factories for nine weeks
(July 17th - Sept. 20th) within a 200 kilometer radius of Beijing to clear the smog for the 2008 Olympics and Paralympics. The area includes Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia and Shandong provinces. There could also be a shut down of material transportation and power plants to clear the air.' Can anyone confirm if this rumour is fact, or just an attempt by the Chinese Goverment to get factories to help improve the air quality before the Olympics? Thanks SJ

Hi SJ,
Although I can't confirm with 100% accuracy that some facilities will be closed, I have heard from a high number of sources and local media that this is the plan. The reason most commonly given is based on pollution concerns and to make the skies clearer. What is more realistic however is this is to make transportation and logistics far easier as hundreds of thousands of people will arrive in an a city that is already above and beyond its population capacity. Beijing city already staged a practice run on closing the streets for a few hours during one day, to see how transportation flows adjusted with less cars on them. The schedule of passenger cars on Beijing roads will be highly regulated during the Olympics to facilitate faster people movement between venues. For manufacturing and transportation, there is a good chance some manufacturers will be closed. Some manufacturers are also discussing plans to close during the Olympics as transportation capacity will be reduced. Many local logistics providers are smaller companies who will devote their capacity resources to the Olympics, 1. because of need and 2. because it is a good contract to be awarded. This means logistics capacity especially around Beijing will be at a premium around and during the Olympics. It is something to be aware of and shouldn't pose a major problem if managed effectively. The first step is to understand how the China operations involved in the supply chain are planning for the event or any changes downstream stakeholders may make. Being a part of the discussion is critical to ensure that upstream companies don't recieve a surprise come June or July. Hope this helps. Have a great upcoming weekend everyone. Brad |

I have recieved this communication from our Logistics Partner at Origin, it details in both English and Chinese what disruption will be caused during the Olympics, this has been officially received from the Chinese Government. SJ I will try to get the English version uploaded, but there appears to be an issue with the upload.

SJ,
Hope you are well. Thank you for the included information. This is helpful. I have added another logistics operator PPT, which outlines similar planning. Hope this adds to the risk mitigation that can be conducted through coordinated efforts with local and global logistics providers. Have a great rest of the week. Brad |
