my org has a really poor software asset management system and it makes life very difficult from a supply chain perspective. Does anybody have an effective system that works?

Can you explain further how software asset management is relevant to supply chain in your situation? Does your company develop and sell software licenses? Or are you just trying to take an "inventory" of the software programs you have on your PC or within your organization?

Yes - its more a case that we manage software licensing that we use to support clients in an outsourcing environment. I am talking literally hundreds of vendors from IBM down to shrinkwrap PC software. Non compliance is a financial risk and you need tight controls.
