Hi
My company is interested in exploring options to optimise container usage acriss different means of transport (rail/road/ocean). I have seen lots of company sites that offer software for this purpose but wanted to be sure about the parameters I should consider, legal restrictions in different countries on height, weight, materials, etc. It would be great if someone here could guide me to materials/sites that can help. Regards |

Hi Bulls-Eye,
Regarding container utilization we do have some knowledge of this specific to China. Container/transportation capacity is really a country specific question as standards in transportation are different for each country. This will affect batch size production and shipment, both capacity and method, rail/road/ocean and air. The first question then is to ask is how far does the supply chain reach? What does the material process flow map look like? Where does it extend to and what is the capacity and standards at each level? Then, some questions to ask will be more detail oriented. Here container type/size can be more closely examined. This should also take into account the various shipping package type/size/weight. Transportation capacity utilization may be a first step or packaging optimization may be depending where the larger gain can be immediately realized. Other items to consider would be layering configuration, corregated type, and stretch wrapping. From a direct/indirect cost perspective one would consider handling, warehousing, transfer and shipping cost per load. As you start to combine the various methods of transportation, this is where the calculations become complex. Product type is also going to play a key role. What type of product is this for? Chemical shipment capacity utilization will be much different then electonics components for example. The direct/indirect costs will have different impacts and sensitivity depending on the product. Lastly, the legal factors are of great importance as well concerning local, regional and national regulations, and customs clearance considerations if product is moving internationally. Again, these pieces will be product specific, so it would be helpful to understand a bit more about your unique case. Feel free to contact me directly is you should have any further questions. Have a great weekend. Brad |

Guys, If you want to exchange personal details, or offer services, do it via personal messages (PM). Moderators will always police overt advertsing very closely.
