Default Supply Chain Software

Hey guys, I was just wondering, what software do you primarily use in Supply Chain, and are their any significant cutbacks in any proposed projects

John,

What kind of software are you interested in?

I have worked for a few different companies now across different industries/sectors and all have used different software.

I have not used any software specifically designed to Manage the Supply Chain, but have used many different ERP / MRP systems, that have managed Purchasing and Supplier Management.

The software I have used is as follows.

Caliach - ERP/MRP/Purchasing
AS400 - ERP / MRP/Purchasing
SAP R3 - ERP / MRP
CSD - ERP / Distribution / Purchasing
JDA - ERP/Distribution/ Purchasing

Hi John,

We use an integrated ERP/SCM system called Dynamics NAV 4.0 and I am with an apparel company that distributes in Australia and sources from China and has the capability to do store-level offshore distribution (at an affliliate factory who essentially does our upstream 3PL).

However, if you are trying to do a survey and help your company/clients choose a SCM system. You probably need to ask yourself which part of the supply chain you or your client's organization is in and find a good fit with a IT provider or implementation partner.

An SCM software application or any IT system is simply a tool that supports business processes within a company and ties everyone to a common platform to deliver the benefits of information sharing. I have seen many distributors here in Australia that have massive and multple warehouses using full-blown SCM systems. Some vendors in that space include Manhattan Associates, HighJump, Infor, Swisslog, etc. We see many wholesale distributors implemented Dynamics (GP, NAV, or AX), JD Edwards, Epicor, etc. But popularity for each package is often a country phenomenon. There is a site called Technology Evaluation Centers (TEC) that you may want to visit if you want to compare different ERP/SCM solutions. SAP solutions are probably the most expensive and have been implemented across many industries in many countries: 3PL, transport, manufacturing, distribution and even retail.

At the technology level, nearly all ERP and SCM systems have many database tables that are similar to one another in order to support a wide range of functionality and business functions/processes. They are often more than enough than most organization would ever need (and some times organizations have to extend the SCM system through customization to incorporate business rules unique to the industry or specific to the organization). The differences are often subtle but more obvious at the User Interface (UI) level. Apple-to-apple comparisons are difficult because nearly all ERP/SCM solution providers could implement an ERP/SCM system in a such a way that will support any business. How often do you hear these solution providers say "no we cannot do it"?
