hi all. new to the forum and feel this could be a valuable resource.
a little about me, my degree is in mechanical engineering. for the past 4 years i've held the position of operations director for a manufacturer. in this position, i act as the purchasing and production manager. i am responsible for all material procurement and production scheduling, among other duties.
i've been a member of apics for a number of years and have considered cpim certification. i feel pursuing this certification would provide valuable knowledge and further advance my career. i want to pursue a self-study regiment and complete the certification as fast as possible while maximizing the experience. i would like to request any insight, advice, shared experiences, etc.

John,
Certifications from APICS are, in general, most appropriate and valued within the manufacturing arena.
The certifications within each industry, including the APICS CPIM can give you documented credibility.
Many candidates have found that having an APICS certification gives you an edge against other candidates when applying for a position.
Welcome to SCF John.
I really enjoyed my APICS CPIM certification. I too have an engineering background and worked in the supply chain in forecasting and supply planning. Currently I am a Supply Chain consultant. The APICS CPIM challenged me to think about supply chain concepts with respect to what I was doing as a practitioner. It really helped me make sure I understood the basics of moving product through a supply chain. I like the APICS approach because it really attacks the basics.
One of best books that I ever read, that tied all supply chain concepts together was The Toyota Way. It really explains the basic philosophical building blocks that can help you think through many supply chain problems you encounter. I have used many concepts from my APICS certification plus the Toyota Way to solve real life supply chain problems. I use a lot of the concepts as a consultant to encourage customers to think differently about their supply chains.
APICS CPIM would really add an edge to your knowledge and will help you to make effective decisions. CPIM is mainly focussed on manufacturing related activities. Once you are through CPIM you can go for APICS CSCP (Certified Supply Chain Professional) which will hone you to entire processes in efficient supply chain enterprise, which includes Suppliers, Distribution centres, manufacturing firms, logistics, retailers, customers, use of IT in enterprise.

I think CSCP is better & its BOK is more board & useful than CPIM
I just cleared the exam and have APICS CSCP 2009 Learning System Material version 2.0, which consists of 4 modules.
Also I have passed the CPIM and have some study notes & datachem too
